Real julius caesar and cleopatra12/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() But in actually, Cleopatra's accomplishments don't support that assertion. She also had a strong effect on the economy because of the trade she facilitated with Rome and Roman provinces, but none of that involved planning military strategy.Īnother issue with Netflix's Queen Cleopatrais that it embraces this idea that Cleopatra was one of the greatest rulers of all time. Still, Cleopatra's focus was on consolidating her rule and feeding the people. Her education would have been focused on religion, languages, economics, astronomy, and perhaps other fields.Ĭleopatra's generals would almost certainly have planned all this for her, however, considering she was their God-Queen she would have had the right to reject any of their plans. She was a brilliant diplomat, but she would not have been trained in the ways of war. Cleopatra's focus would have been on the political and administrative side of the conflict. Cleopatra would have been involved in the war and certainly would have been aware of the movement of her armies, however, it's unlikely she was actually planning military strategy herself. She also would have understood that people would not look well on their Pharaoh fighting like a common soldier. Moreover, Cleopatra was of a more scholarly disposition, and it is unlikely she would have wanted to learn swordplay. She did not try to shatter reality but rather learned how to turn reality to her advantage. It may strengthen her image as a strong female leader on the show, but what made Cleopatra great in reality was that she learned to operate within the constraints of the world at that time. This scene is another consequence of romanticizing Cleopatra's life. There was no need for her take up sword-fighting. Cleopatra would have soldiers, and plenty of them, to do the fighting for her. This would have been seen as improper and probably impractical, especially since Cleopatra was a rule, someone who was seen by her people as a god. Cleopatra was an extremely powerful woman, but it's hard to imagine her being trained for warfare. As exciting as it may seem on television, this scenario is unlikely to have ever occurred. She had Mark Antony kill her sister Arsinoe, before having her other brother, also named Ptolemy, assassinated as well. Cleopatra was a savvy political player and understood the threat that her siblings could pose to her rule, especially after the civil war she fought against her brother, Ptolemy XIII. Netflix suggests that the murders were a last resort for the queen, which is probably not true. In reality, Cleopatra ruthlessly and systematically orchestrated the murder of her siblings to consolidate her power and eliminate rivals for her position. It also depicts her as remorseful in the aftermath of the murders, then tries to justify it in modern terms of morality by simply saying that was how things worked in ancient Egypt. Queen Cleopatra gives the impression that she had no choice but to kill them and tried her hardest to avoid this course. Queen Cleopatra romanticized the deaths of Cleopatra's siblings by applying a tragic element to her role in what happened. ![]()
